About Lesotho

Lesotho (Le-SOO-too), known as the “Kingdom in the Sky,” is a beautiful land of sandstone cliffs, rugged mountains and traditional hand-crafted arts. Map of Africa (Lesotho Highlighted) Its breathtaking mountain vistas are among the most famous on the African continent.  But perhaps because of its status as a tiny, landlocked country bordered on all sides by South Africa, Lesotho has escaped international attention as a trade partner and destination for cultural tourism.

In the same respect, Lesotho has not benefited from international attention to the profound challenges it shares with its neighbors. Lesotho is plagued by isolation, drought, high unemployment and the final result of all of these: poverty. Further, like many of its neighbors, Lesotho—especially the women who form the backbone of society and the heart of our enterprise—have been ravaged by the effects of HIV. Lesotho has among the world’s highest rates of infection of this disease, which devastates not just personal immune systems, but families and entire communities.

The Kingdom of Lesotho is one of three remaining monarchies on the African continent. A democratic, sovereign state, its land area of 30,355 km2 is roughly the size of Belgium, or the American state of Maryland. The inhabitants of Lesotho are the Bathoso (singular: Mosotho) and it recognizes both Sesotho and English as official languages.
